Client Reviews

From those who have been through the process

I came in not really knowing what questions to ask. My late father had left his EPF nomination in an uncertain state, and I had been putting off addressing it for two years. The consultation felt more like a proper conversation than a legal meeting — I was not rushed, and what I received afterwards in writing helped me understand exactly where things stood. I then proceeded with a statutory declaration which was straightforward and well handled.

My wife and I undertook the family review programme as we are both in our late fifties and had not revisited our pension arrangements since our children were young. The individual sessions were useful — there were things each of us had not told the other simply because we had never had a structured occasion to discuss it. The report we received was clear and specific, and we used it to make several changes we had been considering for some time.

I only needed a consultation, and I was not certain I needed that — I thought my situation was simple. It turned out there was a nomination issue I had not been aware of, which the summary clarified. The fee was exactly as stated, the meeting was in the morning as requested, and I left with something in writing I could refer to. I did not feel pressured to do anything further, which I appreciated.

The notarisation appointment was arranged on a Thursday morning that suited me, and the whole process was very calm. The documents had been prepared carefully and I could see my questions had been anticipated in how they were worded. I had one change to the draft which was incorporated without any fuss. The completed documents arrived by post within a week.

My sister and I engaged the family review programme after our mother passed away and we realised how little we understood about her pension arrangements, or our own. The process took about six weeks in total and was not rushed. The report is something we have both returned to several times. My only comment is that communication between sessions could have been slightly more frequent, but the quality of the work itself was good.

I am a retired civil servant and I had heard from a colleague that Cahaya Adil was worth speaking to about pension nominations. The consultation was clear and precise — I was told what applies to my situation specifically, not a general explanation. I left with a written note of what had been discussed and what I might consider doing. I have since returned for the document preparation.

Case Studies

Three situations, handled with care

These accounts are drawn from types of matters we regularly work on. Identifying details have been changed.

Case Study 1 · Morning Consultation

The Situation

A woman in her early forties, employed in the private sector, had not updated her EPF beneficiary nomination since she was twenty-six. She had since married, had two children, and her parents — the original nominees — had passed away. She was unsure whether the nomination was still valid or what would happen to the account in the event of her death.

What Was Done

A morning consultation established the current legal position regarding the existing nomination and its likely effect. The practitioner explained the applicable EPF rules clearly and produced a written summary covering what changes were advisable and what documentation would be required. The client then returned three weeks later to proceed with document preparation.

The Outcome

Updated beneficiary nomination submitted to EPF with legal confirmation of its validity. Client received notarised copies of all documents within five weeks of the initial consultation. She described the process as the first time pension matters had been explained to her in a way she could actually follow.

"I had meant to deal with this for years. It turned out to be much more manageable than I expected, once I had someone to talk it through with."

Case Study 2 · Family Review Programme

The Situation

A family of three adults — two siblings and an elderly parent — needed to understand their collective pension and retirement position. The parent was approaching 65, one sibling was a private sector employee, and the other was self-employed. Each had different pension arrangements and none had spoken about them together before.

What Was Done

The family review programme was undertaken over six weeks. An opening session established the overall picture, followed by individual sessions with each member. A written report was produced summarising each person's position, the gaps identified, and a range of options each might consider. A closing session allowed questions and discussion before the notes for follow-up were finalised.

The Outcome

All three members left with a clear written record of their individual positions. The parent proceeded with a separate document preparation engagement to update their nomination documents. The two siblings used the report as the basis for a conversation they had been postponing for over a year.

"The report gave us something concrete to discuss as a family, rather than a vague concern that nobody wanted to raise."

Case Study 3 · Document Preparation

The Situation

A retired teacher needed a statutory declaration and a letter of authorisation to assist with a pension administration matter that had been held up for several months by a documentation issue. Previous attempts to prepare the documents without legal assistance had been returned by the relevant authority as insufficient.

What Was Done

The documents were prepared to the specific requirements of the authority concerned. A draft was shared with the client for review and one amendment was made before finalisation. The notarisation appointment was arranged at the client's convenience and took approximately forty minutes.

The Outcome

Documents accepted by the authority on first submission. The client's pension administration matter, which had been stalled for four months, was resolved within three weeks of the notarisation appointment. Total time from first contact to completed documents: seventeen days.

"I had been going in circles for months. Getting someone who understood exactly what the documents needed to say made all the difference."
